Self-Isolation To Do List: 5 Ways To Keep Busy

• Written by Roshan

During these unprecedented times where a large portion of the world’s older population are being asked to go into self-isolation for a potentially extended period of time, it can be safe to assume that the whole thing could be quite overwhelming and cause some to worry. We are here to provide as much reassurance as possible and give you some tips about how you can keep busy and stay safe and connected during this period of self-isolation.

1. Join a book club (or listen to audiobooks)

By far one of the best ways to keep busy during self-isolation, is to dive into a new story! There are so many different ways that you can join a book club during this time or listen to a selection of hundreds of audiobooks that are available. You can buy books online from various retailers, discuss them with a circle of friends either on the phone or via video call or simply choose to hold a book club within the members of your own household as a time passing activity! Audiobooks are also a good alternative, with providers like Audible releasing hundreds of new titles available free of charge. Meaning you can listen to a variety of stories while giving the house a spring clean. You can join various already active online book clubs or get book ideas here.

2. Tend to your garden

Many a green thumb is rejoicing right now because they get a little more time to focus on their gardens! There are so many incredible plants in season at the moment that it would be a shame to not take advantage of this time by beautifying your outdoor space and getting some much needed fresh air at the same time. You can have seeds delivered right to your door via contact free delivery or there are even services that can provide sapling plants, ready to put into the soil! Some firm favourites in season right now are tulips, daffodils and bluebells and you can find videos that walk you through how to plant them and tend to them.

3. Start that craft you always wanted to try

Always fancied yourself a potter? A secret knitter? Maybe you have been dying to try out some scrapbooking! Whatever will get the creative juices flowing, self-isolation is the time to do it! Knitting patterns are in abundance online or you can print them out and send them to your relatives to try. Check out this handy guide on how to compile a scrapbook of all of your treasured memories or even as a gift to give to loved ones.

4. Speak to your loved ones

There are so many creative ways to keep in touch nowadays! You don’t necessarily have to explore the complex depths of social media to keep in touch with your children or grandchildren, instead you could simple call them or video chat with them. Video chatting is a great option because it means you can potentially speak to your whole family at once if you want to and have it be a virtual family gathering. Sit down and share a cup of tea or a Sunday roast with your family while still observing the social distancing rules.

5. Learn a new skill

If you want to learn a new language, make a new recipe or even take up photography – teaching yourself a new skill will not only pass the time but is such an effective way to spend the days in self-isolation. Skillshare, DuoLingo and YouTube are just some of the avenues you can use to go through courses that will help you learn a new skill from scratch and soon become an expert!
