1 in 10 Households Don’t Have Smoke Alarms

• Written by Katie

When was the last time you tested your smoke alarm?

We all know that smoke alarms save lives. Thankfully, the vast majority of UK households have at least one smoke alarm installed. However, around one in ten households do not have a working smoke detector, while a further 22% admit they never test theirs. Here at LifeConnect24, we’re teaming up with the UK’s leading fire departments to keep people safe from the dangers of fire.

Benefits of Alarm-Linked Smoke Detectors

We all know the dangers of a fire in the home. When a house fire breaks out, precious minutes and even seconds can make all the difference. A good smoke detector can warn you as soon as a fire starts, buying you time to react and escape.

For elderly and/or disabled people, it’s even more vital to have a good alarm system in place. That’s why we recommend the Alarm-Linked Smoke Detector from leading manufacturer Tunstall. Like all smoke detectors, this device will sound a loud alarm when it detects a fire. What sets it apart from other smoke alarms is that it can connect to your Lifeline Alarm system. When it detects a fire, it will send an alert to our 24-Hour Response Team. They will be able to speak to you and help you assess the risk before contacting the emergency services on your behalf.

Fire Safety Support for Elderly People

Luckily, the fire service is here to help make your home as safe as possible. Here at LifeConnect24, we’ve teamed up with many of the UK’s leading fire departments to raise awareness of fire safety and keep our customers safe.

Did you know that fire departments throughout the UK can carry out a free fire safety check at your home? A member of the fire service will visit your home and identify any fire safety risks. Eligibility for these free checks varies slightly from region to region. In most cases, you’ll be eligible if you’re over 65 or have a disability or medical condition which could make it more difficult to react to a fire.

Installing Smoke Alarms

The single most important thing elderly people can do to ensure fire safety is to install good-quality smoke alarms in their homes. However, we know that many older people might need support when it comes to installation. In addition to the fire safety visits we’ve already mentioned, your local fire department will be able to help you install your smoke alarms if you need support. You may wish to ask for assistance if you experience balance issues or are prone to falls. This is because using a ladder to fit your smoke detector could be particularly hazardous.

When installing smoke alarms, you should fit one alarm on every level of your house. The best place to install a smoke detector is on the ceiling in the middle of the room. It’s important to be sure that you can hear the alarm throughout your house, especially in the bedroom(s). Be sure to contact your local fire service and ask for support if you need it. You can usually find the contact information on your local council’s website.
