LifeConnect24 Customer Stories – Richard Wheeler

• Written by Josh

Welcome to our latest LifeConnect24 Case Study. This is where we take a look into the lives of our customers to find out the reasons why they chose to join our personal alarm service.

Today’s article focuses on new Lifeline Alarm user Richard Wheeler from Worthing, West Sussex. Richard is a retired Government civil servant and is now a keen bridge player at Worthing Bridge Club. In fact, the 73-year-old is the Honourable Secretary of the Sussex County District Bridge Association.

Richard suffered a serious injury 26-years-ago which has now started to have an impact on his everyday life.

He explained: “I have permanent nerve damage to my legs following a spinal injury at the end of 1990 but this has not impaired my walking until the last couple of years following epileptic seizures in 2013 and 2014.

“I now take Phenytoin medication on a daily basis to prevent further seizures, along with various other types of medication such as Ramipril (for Blood pressure control) and Simvastatin (for cholesterol control).

Many of our customers choose to order an alarm due to their long-term health conditions and the effect that they have on their lives – such as suffering from falls. Personal alarms are also sought after by the families of elderly and disabled people, so that they can have peace of mind that their relatives have somebody to help them.

Richard’s condition has left him vulnerable to such an incident and he responded to his families’ concerns by getting in touch with LifeConnect24.

Richard said: “Since the seizures, my balance and mobility have become less secure and I am more inclined to trip or fall. The prompt for my procurement of the alarm was my family’s worry that I would have a fall whilst I was alone and would not be able to recover a standing or sitting position.

They are also concerned that although I have not suffered any significant injuries from falls thus far, I might not be so lucky in future. In the event of an injury, I might not be able to alert anyone to arrange for help.”

Mr Wheeler took the time to visit our website and ended up ordering an alarm on our Annual Plan. Richard, who has been married to Carol for 37 years, also added a Yale Y500 Key Safe to his order, to add that extra bit of security to his home.

Mr Wheeler added: ” The online ordering process for my new alarm was simple and straightforward, so was the set-up and test call via the helpful staff at the monitoring centre . It really could not be any easier to order and get set-up with a Lifeline Alarm.”

Alongside his love of Bridge, Richard also enjoys going on regular cruise holidays. Over the past few years he has visited exciting and sunny destinations such as the Canary Islands and the Caribbean.

It can be common for the elderly to be slightly reluctant about installing a personal alarm for various different reasons. In a message to residents who may be anxious about adding an alarm to their lives, Richard had a positive statement to share.

He said: “There is absolutely no need to worry. Having a personal alarm in your life brings peace of mind, not only to the alarm user but also to his or her family.”
